And as your blog grows in size—maybe even becoming part of your business— it makes sense to ask these questions about it, too. Google Analytics is a simple way of keeping track of who visits your site, what they do when they get there, when they show up, where they're visiting from, how they interact with your content, and even why they showed up in the first place. So instead of being in the dark about what works with your blog or what doesn't, you get a constant stream of information all about it. Throw in some easy-to-figure-out and rather pretty graphs, and you're all ready to manage your blogging empire faster than ever, with a bird's-eye view of what makes your readers tick. In this short video, we'll get you set up with Google Analytics for your self-hosted WordPress blog. First off, you'll want to head to: …and if that sounds like too much typing, just run a search for "analytics" in Google, and that will be the first result you see. When you get there, if you already have a Google account— maybe from Gmail, Google Calendar, or Google Reader, for instance— you'll want to sign in. If you don't have one, clicking over here will remedy that in about a minute. Once you're signed in, click here to sign up for the analytics service. You'll want to put in the URL of your blog, a name for your account, which could be the name of your blog or your name, or something about unicorns— whatever works for you. Set your country, and then your time zone, and click here on "Continue". On the next screen, you'll want to add some contact information. I'll spare you sitting through my filing out the form, but if you want to follow along, you can pause the video now to get this part done. Finally, I get the Terms of Service, which I need to agree to, and I get the option of editing the default data settings if I'm not comfortable. I click on "Create New Account", and the next thing I'll see is a chunk of code. This is important, so copy-paste it to a plain-text editor, but not a word processor like Word or Pages, or leave the window open in a tab of your browser. We'll come back to that in a moment. Now, to get set up with WordPress. There are two ways you could do this: manually, or via one of several plugins that streamline the process for you. To use a plugin, head to the Plugins » Add New section, and run a search on "Google Analytics". There are plenty to choose from, so if you decide to go this way, each has its own set of instructions. If you prefer to do things the manual way, without using a plugin, here's how to do it: You'll want to head back to Google Analytics and copy that chunk of code you were given to your Clipboard with a right or control-click. And then—back in WordPress—go to the Appearance menu and select the Editor option. Next, you'll want to open up the file called "footer.php" from the sidebar over here. When that appears in your editor, paste in the code you copied from Google Analytics just above the part that reads "</body>". Click to update the file and you're set. Now, back on the Google Analytics side, I'll click "Continue" and that will take me right to my account overview. I can see next to the name of my blog that the status icon here is telling me that the account hasn't synced up yet with WordPress. Don't let this worry you; it can take up to twenty-four hours to get up and running and start sharing the information you want to track. If—after that—you still have problems, check the inline help to make sure you did everything right. Analytics has a range of filters to help you track down the information you're looking for, as well as easy ways to add other blogs, web sites, and users to your account, in addition to offering customizable reports that can be sent out right to your email account. There's also a huge range of help documentation and videos that you can check out to get familiar with what's on offer and how to get the best out of your Google Analytics experience. Once you're set up, and your account is synced with your blog, you'll be able to drill down into information about who is using your site, how they're using it, where they're coming from, and a host of other useful information that will help you track and monitor the goals you have for your blog. So once you're logged in to Host-I-Can, you'll find yourself in CPanel. CPanel's got a whole lot of options so you're going to need to scroll down quite a long way before you find the place to install. And the section that you're looking for is "Software / Services". Then, you want to click on "Fantastico Deluxe". There, you've got some different options, and obviously we're going to click on WordPress over here on the left, and that gives us some various information about it: a short description, the WordPress home page, support forums, and "New Installation". That's what we want to click on. So, here actually I can install it on any of the domains I have registered, and here I have just the one, so I select that. I can also choose if I want to have it in the main directory, for instance, my root directory, or a subdirectory such as "blog" if I want to have something else on my main domain. Next, I need to come up with an admin access username, and this is basically what I'm going to use to log in to WordPress. I'm going to put "admin", but it's not the best idea. It's much better to put something unique, and the same goes for the password. In this case, I'm just going to put a generic password in, but it's much better to avoid something like— or especially—"password", because people are going to be able to guess it very easily. Try and make it as unique as possible. Then, "admin nickname": this is what I'm going to be called throughout WordPress, so I'm just going to put "admin" here again, but you can put your name, or anything you like to be called. Also important: your admin email, which by default may not actually be active. It's much better to put the email you use every day, so you get administration emails sent to the right place. Once I've sorted that out, I can decide my site name. In this case, I'm just going to call it "Host-I-Can for WordPress" and just put in some spaces, but this is what's going to appear in the banner at the top of your blog—it's basically the full title. So put anything you like there, and "description" is kind of a tag line that goes underneath that, if you'd like to include one. Click on "Install WordPress" when you've decided those, and then there's just a short wait while it does its thing and gets things installed for you. So now it's set up the database for me, and I've got the name of that database here. I've also got the main directory as to where that's going to be so I can click on that and the access URL, and I just need to click on "Finish Installation" so I can finalize everything. Once that's done, I'll see all of the information I need here, including, for instance, the username, and also my password, which if you've made difficult you may want to copy that to your clipboard or paste that into a text document. I've also got the URL where I'll need to go to do my site administration. That's going to basically be the directory of your blog plus "wp-admin" and that's where you need to go whenever you want to log in to WordPress. It's probably a good idea to bookmark it. Once you're done, if you do want to remember all these things and don't want to make a note of them, you can actually put in your email just down here and it will actually send out an email with all of the admin information. Plus, then you can find it easier. So, I'm going to send that email to myself, and that's going to give me all of the vital information about my blog should I ever misplace it or get a bit forgetful. And there we are—it's all installed and ready to go. So, if I ever want to come back, I can come down here and I'll see that this is the current installation, and my root directory (that's the little slash mark), and I can also visit the site from here or remove it, should I wish to in the future. So I've clicked "Visit Site", and I can now go to "Login" in the Meta section and log in to my account. And that takes me to my Dashboard, where I can start customizing my blog and do whatever I like with it. So when you first log in to Media Temple you're going to be in your account center and you'll see your list of domains or a single domain just here. You want to click on the "Admin" for the domain that you're about to install on, and you'll now see that you've got a whole bunch of different options here for things that you can do. So close in on the "One click applications" option and click on that. Now you'll see any previous applications you've got installed, and the option to "Add New Application" So click on that, and you're going to see a warning telling you that this is not the way to upgrade but as we're installing for the first time, we don't really need to worry ourselves about that so let's just click on "OK" and obviously WordPress is number two here so we just click on "Install". On the next screen there are a couple of options for us. The first is do we want to install it in a subdirectory? For instance blog.mediatempleforwordpress.com or alternatively we can choose to have that in the root directory, so when people go to our website WordPress is the first thing that they'll see, I'm going to do that in this case, so I'm just going to delete the blog part here, so my main site is my WordPress blog. But, say you had something else on that root directory: you could have news.mediatempleforwordpress.com, or whatever else you want Let's just leave it at that, though. Next we've got the database configuration, and here I can just leave this as the default because it's already set something up for me, but the name here isn't so important, so I could quite easily click on "new" and put something else in there - that's not an issue. Say I already have a WordPress install, I could have a separate one and call that WP1 or WP2, or anything else. Let's just leave that at default for now. Then, I've got a database table prefix which again is something you can leave as the default unless you already have other installations that you're adding to So when that's done, just click on "Install" and you'll see that the directory already exists in this case. I'm just going to click on "Install anyway". So now if I look at this green box here that says there's a "pending installation". It's just going to take a minute or two for that to be set up, but here's going to be the place where I'll find it once it's ready. So let's just wait for a minute or two, and once that's ready, That will change and let me know that the installation is ready to be finished. There we go. So all I need to do now where it says "finish installation" is click over here on "Finish" and that's going to take me to just do the finishing touches. So, first I might need to think of a title for my blog, and this is going to appear probably in the header of the blog— it's going to be the main title—it *is* something I can change later, so it doesn't matter if you're not 100% sure at this point. Just put in anything; it's not so important. Email: you should be extra sure you get it right; double-check this, because this is where all of your admin information is going to get sent to. Finally, I can decide if I want to allow my blog to appear in search engines, like Google and Technorati. As my blog's public, it's a good idea to help people find it. Otherwise, I can turn it off. Then, I just click on "Install WordPress", And I'm given a username, which is "admin", and a strange-looking password that's going to be hard for people to guess. So I'm going to want to copy and paste that, and I can change it later. So I'm just going to copy that now, and then the next thing I'm going to do is log in to my account. So, here, obviously, I've put in "admin", which is the username, and then I'll just paste that directly into the password box. I can have WordPress remember me for a future date, or not. And then log in, and here I am in my Dashboard. So now I can start customizing things and get ready to go, or I can just click on the title up here, and that's going to show me what my blog looks like in its current state. It's really simple. So, when you log in to DreamHost, you're going to see this page, and you're going to need to go to "One-Click Installers", so just click on that there. You'll now see two options: the "Easy Mode", and the "Advanced Mode". We don't actually recommend the "Easy Mode", because it doesn't allow you to access the files for the installation, so you can't change your theme, your plugins, or any of those things apart from what's been installed with it. If you do want to go that way, it's really simple. So, obviously, you select WordPress here, and then scroll down to the bottom and all you need to do is put in a name for your blog, the email address you'd like to use to have all administration email sent from WordPress, and also the domain or subdomain that you want to use. Now, in this case, you've got two options: in this case, it's automatically set it to blog.dreamhostforwordpress.com. That's going to put it in a separate subdomain; when people to dreamhostforwordpress.com, they're going to see something different. Now, I could change that and just get rid of the "blog" part altogether, and that part's just up to you, really. So, click on "Install it for me now", and that will do it. But I don't recommend that. Let's go for the "Advanced Mode", because it's not too difficult, and it's going to give a lot more customization options. So, obviously, we've chosen WordPress up here—2.7 is the latest version— and then we'll scroll down to the bottom, and now we've got some options here. Not many. First of all, if I've got more than one domain, I can select it here. I've just got the one, so I can only select one of them. Then I can decide if I want to have it in the main domain or a subdirectory, for instance, "blog" or "news" or something else if I'm using my main domain for something other than WordPress. Next, I need to add a new database name, and it's not really important what you call it. The important thing, really, is just to keep it simple, so I'm just going to give it a simple name: "DreamHost", which is the place I'm using to host it, and "wp" for WordPress. If you're installing WordPress for the first time, the next line is not so important; you can actually delete it—the default that they've put here— and you're not going to have any problems. So, next I'm going to put in a username, which could be admin, which is the default, or anything else that you like, if you want to think of something a bit more creative and probably difficult for people to guess. So I'm going to put "smashcut", which is my usual username, and then I put in a password, which I'll need to put in twice, for security's sake, to make sure it's the right password. I'm putting a nice long one in; you don't have to make it as long, but it's a good idea obviously to put something people aren't going to guess too easily. Then, just click on "Install it for me now" and that's going to process as the installation gets set up for us. So, once that's done, you should see a success screen with this nice, big green box here telling us that it's been successful, and that it will be installed within about ten minutes. So, you're going to need to wait here, because if you click here now, you're just going to see a white page and think, "oh, where did my web site go?" It's not a problem. So, after about ten minutes, you'll have an email telling you where to go, so click on that, and you'll find yourself here, and then all you'll need to do is give yourself a blog title—what's going to appear at the top of the blog— and then put in an email, and make sure you get this right, because obviously this is going to be used for all of your admin in the future. So, with that double-checked, I've also got the option to allow my blog to appear in search engines, like Google and Technorati, which is a good idea if you want to be found. If you don't, you can uncheck that. So that's an option. Click on "Install WordPress", and—hey, presto—you're given a username, which is "admin", and a crazy-looking password that you're going to need to copy so you can log in with it. Don't worry; you can change this later. So once you're sure you've definitely copied that, you're ready to log in. So just click on the "Log In" button down here. Then I'm going to type in "admin" and paste in the strange password that we just had generated for us. I've also got the option here for WordPress to remember me in the future, but I'm going to leave that unchecked. So, when you log in to your Bluehost account, you need to scroll down in CPanel quite a way down. You'll see now that you've got a couple of options: you've got Simple Scripts, and there's also WordPress, which will basically take you to Simple Scripts; it's just a shortcut. So, let's go in through Simple Scripts, in case you do it that way. When you go in, you'll see that there are a number of options, and one of them, obviously, is WordPress. So, if you click on that, that will take you through, and you'll see some more information—for instance, the current version, which is 2.7— along with a list of the other versions that you can install using Simple Scripts. There are links to the site and support forums, but what you want to do is install on an existing server. So what you need to do is click "Install Now" and that's going to take you through the process. So, here you can see you've got some information that you need to fill in: You can choose the latest version—2.7—which we'd recommend, or an earlier version if you'd prefer, and then you decide where you want to put the blog. So—for instance—if you have more than one domain, you can select them here. I've just got the one with Bluehost. And then, you can decide if you want to have it in the main domain, in which case, leave this completely blank. Or, if you want to put it into a subdirectory, for instance, "blog" or "news" or a different category, and leave your main domain as something else, you can also do that. Optionally, you can now put in a name for your site, and this is something that you can change in WordPress at any time, but this is what's going to appear basically at the top of your blog. So, next up, you've got Advanced Configuration, and you can have it automatically generate an administrator login for you, in which case it would just be "admin", and it will give you a password also, randomly generated. And also, you can have it automatically create a new database. So, if you want to edit the admin information, just uncheck here and you'll see that you can change the admin username and also put in your own password, which you'll need to put in twice. I'm just going to leave that and let it automatically generate, but that is an option that you might want to consider. Finally, you just need to click the legal flotsam and jetsam and click on "complete" and that's going to install WordPress for you. And pretty much, that's it; you're done. So you've got the option, for instance, to click on this huge green button and actually look at what your live site is going to look like. Now, there's not going to be much there, but—probably importantly—you're going to want to copy down some of the information below, for instance, the admin URL, which is going to be your URL followed by "wp-admin", and also the password, which is something you're going to have to copy. You can change this later, but you're going to need it, obviously, to log in to your WordPress the first time. So, I've clicked on the admin URL and here, I can log into my WordPress account. So I'm just going to paste in the password that I just copied there, and here I am in the Dashboard, ready to go. So, very simple, and you're up and running with your own self-installed WordPress in less than a couple of minutes. So, this is just the beginning, really, because now you can go in and start customizing things to your taste, or if you just click here, you can take a look at what your live blog looks like at the moment.
