So the first thing you're going to need to do is go to Upgrades and purchase the VideoPress upgrade if you don't have that already. You can use PayPal, or you can also use your credit card via PayPal to do this. Optionally, you can top up some extra space if you need to. So now, when I write a post, I click on this video icon, and I can bring in things from my media library, or I can upload a video directly, so I'm going to click on that, select a video, and that's going to upload for me. It's a good idea at this stage to add a title and any other meta information, because that's going to appear in the RSS feed of your video. I can also decide if I'd like people to not be able to share it by embedding, or the standard, which is that people can embed it. I can set a rating—now "G" is the standard, but obviously if you've got more mature content, you can change that here— and finally, I've got the shortcode for embedding, which I can actually copy here, should I want to email it to someone or something else like that. I can also access that same information by clicking on the "Embed" section of the video here where I've got the WordPress.com shortcode for other WordPress.com users, which I can copy right to my clipboard with that button. And also, the fuller embed code for people that are using self-hosted WordPress or other web pages, so the options are open there. You'll want to use this other one for anything other than a WordPress.com blog but it also means that you can share the video pretty much anywhere on the web. Once I'm happy with all that, I just need to click on "Insert Into Post" and I'm now going to see a small piece of shortcode in my post. It doesn't matter if it's the HTML or visual editor; the result that I'll get when I publish looks like this, with a full "HD On" button people can turn on to enter full HD mode, full-screen mode, so they can really take advantage of that high-definition video; and of course, the different embed options. ]]> http://wordpress.tv/2009/08/05/videopress-integration-for-self-hosted-wordpress/feed/ 41 Michael Pick g VideoPress Integration for Self-Hosted WordPress In this short tutorial, we'll show you how to get set up and integrated with the VideoPress service and your self-hosted WordPress blog, giving you a fully-embeddable, minimally-styled, HD player for your blogs. So, first of all, you're going to need a WordPress.com account, but you're only ever going to need to log in to it once. So sign up to that: quickly add in your username, throw in a password, and add your email address, click on the legal flotsam and jetsam, and then the most important part is that you need to make sure you have "Gimme a blog!" selected, not "Just a username", because you're going to need that for the uploads. Once that's done, you should see over on the left here a link to your blog, so click on that, and then in the Dashboard of the blog, head to the Upgrades section, and that's where you're going to purchase the VideoPress upgrade. So it's right down on the bottom, and it costs $59.97, so click on that, put in your credentials, and you can pay with PayPal, or with your credit card via PayPal. And once that's done, you may want to add some extra space. You have space included, but if you do need any more, there are options for 5, 15, and 25 GB upgrades, so maybe now's the time to do that. Now, in my self-hosted blog, I now need to install a plugin, so I go to the Plugins menu and select Add New. Here, I'm going to run a search for "VideoPress" and click on "Search Plugins". The first option here is VideoPress, so move over to the right and click on "Install". "Install Now", and finally, activate the plugin. Once that's all installed, I'm good to go, so when I now next come to write a post, I'll see that I've got a new icon just along above the top of my editor, where it says "Upload/Insert", so I click on this here, and that opens up VideoPress. I'll need to sync up with my WordPress.com account the first time I use it, so I'll put in my details here (if I have more than one blog, it'll ask me to select those). Then, I'm taken right into the Media Library of that blog, where I can select an existing video like this, and it's important when you do that to make sure that you add a title. This will appear in lots of different places, including the RSS feed of the blog. So I'm just going to put in an appropriate title. After that, I've got the option of description, I can decide if I'd like to make it private by not sharing the embed code or if I'd like to be able to share that with whoever I like, I can add a rating, but the important part that I really need is the shortcode, which I'm just going to copy to my clipboard, click out, and then just paste directly into the post editor, whether that's in visual or HTML mode. So now, when I publish, I've got my video good to go in my blog. This is pretty simple. Now, what if I want to add a new video? Same process: click on the VideoPress icon, and when that opens up I need to go to "From Computer", the left-hand-side tab up here, select the tab for my Desktop, choose a video, and then that's going to upload for me. If you encounter any problems with Flash, there's also a browser uploader, which you can click on to use that instead. Once the video's uploaded, again, I'm going to want to add a title—always important, because this is going to appear in all of your metadata. All of the other stuff's kind of optional. And then, I need to grab that shortcode, and just paste that right into my post. So I'm going to publish that up to my blog and that's good to go. Click on "View Post", and there I've got it. So, VideoPress, fully integrated with a self-hosted blog, with only ever really having to go into .com just the once. When you head to the Appearance » Widgets menu, you'll notice that everything now looks and feels like the rest of the updated WordPress interface. That means the space you have can be used more effectively, and it's easier to tailor it to your needs. However many sidebars you have, you'll now see that they're all stacked up over here on the right, and you can open and close them down to free up space as you need it. The same goes for the windows over on the left here also, which will also resize according to the size of your browser window. One of the things you asked for was the ability to save the details of your widgets even when you change themes, and now you can, thanks to the Inactive Widgets pane just down here. If you change to a theme with its own default set of widgets or a different layout, your previous selections will all be stored down here in the Inactive Widgets panel. You can also use the panel to save items you might want to temporarily save for later use. Also, if you decide you'd like to set up a widget but not activate it right away, you can drag it directly down to the Inactive Widgets pane, and start adding your details. That means that later on, when you decide that you do want to use it, you can drag it straight into your sidebar, and it'll be ready to go. So if I wanted to set up a Pages widget, but didn't quite have the pages ready, I could come back some time later, and then drag them up to the sidebar, and all of the details are there—ready to go. Of course, I can also drag widgets across from one sidebar to another. All of the changes remain intact. Saving of the layout has now been completely automated, so as long as I save a particular widget's details, I don't need to make any more saves. And as it's possible to use multiple instances of the same widget, I can now see my own title next to the title of the widget type. Then, down here at the bottom, you should see one for Twitter. So what you need to do is just drag that over into whichever sidebar you'd like your Twitter updates to appear in, and then it will give you some options to fill out. Give it a title to let people know what's happening— here I'm going to just put something nice and simple like "Tweets". Next up, you'll want to add your Twitter username, and if you have multiple sidebars you can also drag multiple widgets in, with different usernames if you have more than one Twitter account. So now we've got that sorted; the next thing we're going to look at is the maximum number of tweets to show, which is basically going to be anything from one— if you just want to show the latest update in your sidebar— right up to twenty, if you really want to show a full cross-section of your stream. I'm going to go with the default of five here. If you don't want to include replies to other people, and just your main messages, you can click here to hide all "@username" replies, and that will get rid of them for you. I'm probably going to keep that in there, because I think the conversation's what Twitter is all about. Finally, you can add some text to display between the tweet and the timestamp, which I'll show you in just a moment. For now, let's just save this one up and see how that looks in the sidebar of my blog. So here's how it looks live on my blog, and if I move over here to the right, you can see that I've got the latest tweets followed by the timestamp, that can be clicked through to take you to my Twitter stream. Now, if I wanted to add this little extra word here—a space, "tweeted", and then add another space— and in my live blog you'll see that it's now added between the message and the timestamp—just the word "tweeted". So that's it. Head to Application Settings in Facebook, and then head to the Notes option and click on that. Once that's open, you should see this page, and over on the right here, you can see "Import a blog". Once you've clicked on that, it's just a matter of entering the URL (the web site address) of your blog. If you like you can also put the feed URL, but it's not necessary, so I'm just going to put in here my WordPress blog, and it will automatically detect where the feed is, to bring that content in. Then, I just need to click here to start importing. After a couple of moments, I'll now see all of my content for review to make sure that I've got the right content coming in to my Facebook account. So I'll just have a quick scroll through—it's going to list all of the posts— and then right down at the bottom I'll see this: it says "Confirm Import". So, I'll click on that and you'll now see that on my profile I've got my latest notes— my latest blog posts—all there, so I can click through to those; I also have the option, if I scroll down to see the different ones that have been posted; people can add comments, just like they could to any other Facebook content, they can click on "Like", or they can share it with other friends. That opens up a new dialog where they can add their own little note and then post that. Also, as the owner of the blog, I can remove any of the content that I don't want to be included in my Notes stream, just by clicking on the Remove tabs here. Clicking through to a blog post displays the blog post in full, so people can read it then and there within Facebook; it's also possible if you scroll down to view the original post, which will take them to my WordPress blog. ]]> http://wordpress.tv/2009/07/17/add-user-ratings/feed/ 15 Michael Pick g Add User Ratings to your WordPress.com Posts, Pages & Comments Getting feedback from your site visitors can be an important part of blogging, and to make that even easier, we've added the PollDaddy Rating widget to WordPress.com. With the option to add user ratings to your posts, pages, comments, or any combination of those, the people visiting your blog can leave ratings on your content. So, how do you get set up? When you visit your blog's Dashboard, you'll now see a new menu option called "Ratings" just underneath the Comments menu and just above the Polls menu. Click on that, and you'll see some settings. Along the top here, we have three tabs: One for posts, one for pages, and another for comments. So, let's say I'm going to enable ratings on my posts. I click here on the checkbox, and the option to have them appear above or below each post is something I can choose from. I save, and now if I want to tweak things further, I can access Advanced Settings. I can choose between the common five-star rating system or the thumbs-up/thumbs-down "Nero" rating style. Then, I tweak—for instance—the size and color of the styles with a preview appearing over on the right. Ditto for the Nero-style hands. If I prefer, I can even put in the URL of a different image I prefer to use just here. Finally, I can change alignment, position, and various other styling options as well as being able to change the particular phrases used to describe the ratings my users have given a post, comment, or page. So, now that I'm happy with all that, I click on "Save Changes". I'm going to leave them off my pages, so I skip that and add them to comments, click here again, choose whether ratings will appear, and save. So, now I'm set up; let's have a look at a post. And here's some comments. So, as you can see, it's pretty easy, and adds an extra layer of interactivity to your blog content. Once I have some results, I can head to the second menu option, which will show me the ongoing results of people's voting. I can view ratings for posts, pages, or comments clicking on View Report, and also filter by the period of time I want to check ratings for. In this way, I can get a quick idea of what's been most popular this week, or across the entire life of my blog, which might in turn affect the decisions I make with my future content.
