WordCamp Fayetteville #wcfay 2011 Blogger Track video 05 -

WordCamp Fayetteville Forum: Finding Your Niche Online, Moderator Jon Schleuss

TheCityWire.com’s Michael Tilley, NWATunedIn.com’s Kevin Kinder, NWAMotherlode.com’s Shannon Magsam and OzarkNaturalFoods.com’s Alexa McGriff will discuss their relatively new online publications, the challenges they face and how they measure success in their rapidly competitive markets.

Michael Tilley represents the the City Wire, an online publication focused on business, politics and culture in Northwest Arkansas. The site began in 2006 as a community forum and emerged in 2008 as a news site. Tilley says they don’t compete with anyone, offering focused content driven to the business elite of the Fort Smith area.

Kevin Kinder covers the music scene of Northwest Arkansas at TunedIn. The blog started in 2007 as a compliment to the newspaper publication What’s Up from Northwest Arkansas Newspapers. It has since evolved into a place with live music reviews, show times and general music news.

Shannon Magsam is the co-creator of NWA Motherlode, a website with helpful information for Northwest Arkansas mothers. She says she and her co-creator Gwen Rockwood decided the area needed a website for moms. Magsam said their website gives transitioning moms an “instant community.”

Alexa McGriff is part of Ozark Natural foods, a Fayetteville food co-op. She says they started blogging last November to provide another avenue for the company to connect with their customers. McGriff says they use the blog to educate customers on different products, give recipes and news updates on the organic food industry.

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:18.000" end="00:03:21.000">Really amazing WordPress sites,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:21.000" end="00:03:24.000">and it's all categorized, so you can see all the celebrities.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:24.000" end="00:03:27.000">You can see all the WordPress as CMS. You can see all the pretty much everything.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:27.000" end="00:03:30.000">And it's pretty fun to go through there.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:30.000" end="00:03:33.000">So famous users.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:33.000" end="00:03:36.000">Well, hopefully, you'll never see their blog,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:36.000" end="00:03:39.000">but I hear that the CIA and the FBI have WordPress blogs internally.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:39.000" end="00:03:43.000">[What would you say is actually the biggest misconception people have about WordPress?]</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:43.000" end="00:03:46.000">That's a good question.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:46.000" end="00:03:49.000">I think the biggest misconception might be</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:49.000" end="00:03:52.000">that it's only for "pro bloggers",</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:52.000" end="00:03:57.000">when we've done a lot of work to make it accessible to everyone.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:57.000" end="00:04:00.000">In fact, even my mom now has a WordPress blog.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:00.000" end="00:04:03.000">[Do you think there are any challenges ahead for WordPress?]</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:03.000" end="00:04:06.000">Oh, sure.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:06.000" end="00:04:09.000">I think that definitely, as WordPress grows,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:09.000" end="00:04:12.000">the scale of things just becomes more difficult to manage.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:12.000" end="00:04:15.000">There's now hundreds of developers</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:15.000" end="00:04:18.000">and thousands of plugins, and all these sorts of things.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:18.000" end="00:04:21.000">And they all need some loving, you know?</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:21.000" end="00:04:24.000">We need to pay attention to all of them.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:24.000" end="00:04:27.000">So there's just more stuff going on than ever before.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:36.000" end="00:04:39.000">There's just a lot going on.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:39.000" end="00:04:42.000">[What's the relationship between other social media,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:42.000" end="00:04:45.000">like Twitter and Facebook, and WordPress?]</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:45.000" end="00:04:48.000">I think they're pretty complementary. A lot of people I follow on Twitter</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:48.000" end="00:04:51.000">use it as a distribution mechanism for their blog.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:51.000" end="00:04:54.000">So if they have a new blog post, they'll point to their blog, and that will drive traffic.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:54.000" end="00:04:57.000">And of course, everyone loves more traffic.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:57.000" end="00:05:00.000">And then sometimes Twitter is nice if you just have your cell phone</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:00.000" end="00:05:03.000">just to fire off a really quick message.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:09.000" end="00:04:12.000">So the key—the reason why plugins are GPL—</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:12.000" end="00:04:15.000">is because they hook into</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:27.000" end="00:05:30.000">does that theme fall under the GPL?</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:30.000" end="00:05:33.000">The answer is no, because it's not being distributed.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:33.000" end="00:05:36.000">When something's distributed, it's available for download to the public,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:36.000" end="00:05:39.000">you're selling it in a store, or it's a mass distribution.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:39.000" end="00:05:42.000">When you do something for one site, or just for yourself,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:42.000" end="00:05:45.000">like for example the theme on my blog, which is just on my blog,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:45.000" end="00:05:48.000">it's not being distributed in any way,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:48.000" end="00:05:51.000">so the GPL doesn't kick in, until it's distributed.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:51.000" end="00:05:54.000">So there's some confusion around things that are premium</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:54.000" end="00:05:57.000">but kosher by the GPL and things that aren't.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:57.000" end="00:06:00.000">So one of the things that we're doing now is making a page</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:00.000" end="00:06:03.000">on the WordPress Theme Directory</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:03.000" end="00:06:06.000">that will point to folks that sell themes that are super-high-quality</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:06.000" end="00:06:09.000">and also have commercial support—things you can buy around them.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:09.000" end="00:06:12.000">But all the code is GPL,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:12.000" end="00:06:15.000">so you retain all the freedoms that you do from WordPress.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:15.000" end="00:06:18.000">And they don't violate WordPress's license or anything.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:18.000" end="00:06:21.000">We're going to have sort of a mini-directory of those that point to the different sites.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:21.000" end="00:06:24.000">[If I GPL my premium theme,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:24.000" end="00:06:27.000">will people just pass it to their friends and not pay me for it?]</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:27.000" end="00:06:30.000">Some folks are definitely scared of the idea</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:30.000" end="00:06:33.000">that one person would download their theme and then distribute it to everyone,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:33.000" end="00:06:36.000">and then they would only sell one.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:36.000" end="00:06:39.000">In reality, this is already happening through piracy.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:39.000" end="00:06:42.000">Every single premium theme out there</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:42.000" end="00:06:45.000">is available for free for download on the web somewhere,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:45.000" end="00:06:48.000">if you just look for a little bit.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:48.000" end="00:06:52.000">So just like this hasn't affected their business, I think they need to move the value up the chain.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:52.000" end="00:06:57.000">So rather than selling just the code, sell the things that are most valuable to folks.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:57.000" end="00:07:00.000">When I talk to people who buy premium themes,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:00.000" end="00:07:03.000">or who pay for these things, often what they tell me</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:03.000" end="00:07:06.000">is that it's not that the design or anything isn't</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:06.000" end="00:07:09.000">something they can get from a free theme,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:09.000" end="00:07:12.000">but they really like the community, the support: everything around it.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:12.000" end="00:07:15.000">The fact that it has a nice packaged site that spells out the benefits.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:15.000" end="00:07:19.000">They know if something goes wrong, there's a forum or someplace for them to go</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:19.000" end="00:07:22.000">where they can get help. And that's worth money.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:22.000" end="00:07:25.000">And so I think we should try to emphasize those,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:25.000" end="00:07:28.000">and encourage people to adopt business models</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:28.000" end="00:07:31.000">which function on economics of abundance, not economics of scarcity.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:31.000" end="00:07:34.000">So what we'd like to do</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:34.000" end="00:07:37.000">is there's a number of people innovating on top of the GPL.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:37.000" end="00:07:40.000">They create some cool business models around it.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:40.000" end="00:07:43.000">One of these is having themes which are 100% GPL:</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:43.000" end="00:07:46.000">there are no restrictions on your freedoms,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:46.000" end="00:07:49.000">you can redistribute them, you can use them, you can modify them however you like.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:49.000" end="00:07:52.000">But they have commercial support available.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:52.000" end="00:07:55.000">So let's say you want to use a theme, but you are hoping</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:55.000" end="00:07:58.000">that if you have a problem with it, there's someone you can—</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:58.000" end="00:08:01.000">the online equivalent of pick up the phone and talk to.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:01.000" end="00:08:04.000">Many of these premium themes have support forums,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:04.000" end="00:08:07.000">paid customization help, things like that.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:07.000" end="00:08:10.000">And some really nice web sites around them.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:10.000" end="00:08:13.000">Some folks were doing this under the GPL,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:13.000" end="00:08:16.000">and some folks were doing this with proprietary licenses,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:16.000" end="00:08:19.000">that restrict your freedoms and are generally evil.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:19.000" end="00:08:23.000">So we're trying to point to the people who are doing this in a way that doesn't restrict your freedoms,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:23.000" end="00:08:26.000">to encourage them, reward them, and to help more folks adopt this model.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:26.000" end="00:08:29.000">Basically, we're going to have a directory</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:29.000" end="00:08:32.000">of the Brian Gardners of the world,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:32.000" end="00:08:35.000">the StudioPresses and Press75's, and all those,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:35.000" end="00:08:38.000">who are doing GPL-based development,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:38.000" end="00:08:42.000">and then if you come across one, say a Thesis, which is not,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:42.000" end="00:08:45.000">you know to avoid it.</media:text>
