<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:00:47.000" end="00:00:50.000">and I put it off, I put if off, I put it off; </media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:00:50.000" end="00:00:53.000">and then finally, one day at lunch, I was like, "You know what?</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:00:53.000" end="00:00:56.000">I'm just going to call him." So I called him, and he answered,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:00:56.000" end="00:00:59.000">and I was like, "Hi; my name's Tim Ferriss;"</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:00:59.000" end="00:01:02.000">and I went and I went and I went, and I finished, and then he chuckled,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:02.000" end="00:01:05.000">like he does, and said very calmly like Yoda,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:05.000" end="00:01:09.000">"That is the longest self-introduction I've ever heard in my life."</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:09.000" end="00:01:12.000">So despite those inauspicious beginnings,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:12.000" end="00:01:15.000">we've had a lot of fun.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:15.000" end="00:01:18.000">So the title of this talk was "Scalable Blogging Behaviors,"</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:18.000" end="00:01:21.000">which is really, really boring.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:21.000" end="00:01:24.000">So the content is the same,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:24.000" end="00:01:27.000">but I'm going to call it: "How to Blog Without Killing Yourself."</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:27.000" end="00:01:32.000">And I'll explain some of the best practices</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:32.000" end="00:01:37.000">when I write, research, track my blog,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:37.000" end="00:01:40.000">and also point out some of the things that I find fun</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:40.000" end="00:01:43.000">and why I do all of this.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:43.000" end="00:01:48.000">So the first question that I get a lot: "Why do I blog?"</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:48.000" end="00:01:51.000">Why would I blog?</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:51.000" end="00:01:56.000">It's not for income generation, because there are much faster ways to generate income.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:56.000" end="00:01:59.000">So why do I blog? So if you look here,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:01:59.000" end="00:02:02.000">this is one of my posts; it's a very popular post called</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:02.000" end="00:02:08.000">"Total Immersion;" how I learned to swim after decades of phobia about swimming.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:08.000" end="00:02:12.000">And then on the right-hand side, you'll see this. I posted this during the Olympics,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:12.000" end="00:02:19.000">when everyone was watching of course to see if the Spinks medal record would be broken,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:19.000" end="00:02:24.000">and on the right-hand side, this is Ron Turner who pops up (he's the USA National Team coach),</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:24.000" end="00:02:28.000">offering advice, and there was a former Olympian, and a silver medalist,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:28.000" end="00:02:31.000">at the Olympics, in a separate post who popped up to offer advice,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:31.000" end="00:02:34.000">and the bigger question is, "Why do I do anything?"</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:34.000" end="00:02:39.000">And this is the most important question that you can answer.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:39.000" end="00:02:42.000">And the rather new-age answer that I came up with,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:42.000" end="00:02:45.000">because I get asked a lot, "What do you want in life? What do you want?"</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:45.000" end="00:02:48.000">It's a very broad question.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:48.000" end="00:02:51.000">But in general, it is to love, be loved,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:51.000" end="00:02:54.000">and never stop learning, and that sounds very fufu-wawa;</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:54.000" end="00:02:57.000">let's hold hands and dance around,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:02:57.000" end="00:03:00.000">but it translates into very important decisions.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:00.000" end="00:03:03.000">So another way to look at that would be</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:03.000" end="00:03:06.000">that I use my blog for access to people and resources.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:06.000" end="00:03:11.000">So income isn't your only currency.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:11.000" end="00:03:14.000">You have authority, you have audience, you have the right audience,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:14.000" end="00:03:17.000">not just a large audience. So in this case,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:17.000" end="00:03:20.000">it is the perfect laboratory for not only learning,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:20.000" end="00:03:23.000">learning from my readers, but also sharing</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:23.000" end="00:03:26.000">and that translates into my broader goals.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:26.000" end="00:03:30.000">So that is why I blog.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:30.000" end="00:03:33.000">And there's indirect and direct income from a blog.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:33.000" end="00:03:36.000">I'm not going to get into monetization; we can talk about that in the Q&A;</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:36.000" end="00:03:39.000">but most of the benefit that I get is indirect.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:39.000" end="00:03:42.000">It's from meeting people via the blog.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:42.000" end="00:03:50.000">So the overarching principle in my life, and also when I blog,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:50.000" end="00:03:54.000">is that "whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect."</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:54.000" end="00:03:57.000">So there are a lot of rules.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:03:57.000" end="00:04:00.000">There are many, many rules that you will feel obligated to follow in blogging.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:00.000" end="00:04:03.000">When I was just getting started, I was told</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:03.000" end="00:04:06.000">that I had to put up six posts before lunch,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:06.000" end="00:04:09.000">and you might expect that that doesn't jibe very well</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:09.000" end="00:04:12.000">with my philosophy in general.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:12.000" end="00:04:15.000">And as it turns out, posting six times a day,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:15.000" end="00:04:18.000">posting more, bringing more audience,</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:18.000" end="00:04:24.000">posting times, different old wives' tales that have been passed along,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:24.000" end="00:04:28.000">in the relative short time span that we've all been sharing these practices,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:28.000" end="00:04:33.000">really don't withstand scrutiny and testing in most cases.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:33.000" end="00:04:36.000">I'll stop pointing at the screen now, I think.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:36.000" end="00:04:41.000">All right. So, let's talk about frequency and tools.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:41.000" end="00:04:44.000">So what you're looking at here is a screen shot</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:44.000" end="00:04:47.000">from CrazyEgg. CrazyEgg.com, which I use</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:47.000" end="00:04:50.000">for looking at heatmaps, and more specifically</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:50.000" end="00:04:53.000">click patterns on my blog.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:53.000" end="00:04:56.000">And I will get to frequency, but I want to talk about what you're looking at first.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:56.000" end="00:04:59.000">So that I can do—this is a Confetti view—</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:04:59.000" end="00:05:02.000">and I'll set it to a test for 5,000 clicks—</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:02.000" end="00:05:05.000">and I'll do this repeatedly every time I make a homepage design change;</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:05.000" end="00:05:08.000">I will run a test like this, and you just slap in one or two lines</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:08.000" end="00:05:14.000">of JavaScript and it will track it automatically.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:14.000" end="00:05:17.000">And you can see here that I'm looking at my top 15 referrers,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:17.000" end="00:05:20.000">which are my largest 15 sources of traffic,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:20.000" end="00:05:23.000">and then I can select or deselect them</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:23.000" end="00:05:26.000">to see where people are clicking.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:26.000" end="00:05:29.000">And you learn some very interesting things.</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:29.000" end="00:05:32.000">So for example, if people come through google.com, which is not highlighted right now,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:32.000" end="00:05:35.000">they click on the most popular of all time,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:35.000" end="00:05:38.000">on this upper-right-hand side.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:38.000" end="00:05:41.000">And this is my most valuable real estate, I've realized.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:41.000" end="00:05:44.000">Over and over again; it's almost like a reverse Google pattern:</media:text>

<media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:44.000" end="00:05:47.000">on Google, if you look at the click patterns, it seems to be generally an "F";</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:47.000" end="00:05:50.000">on my blog, it's completely the opposite, because the sidebar's on the right-hand side.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:50.000" end="00:05:53.000">So Americans and—your guys' traffic will generate clicks</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:53.000" end="00:05:56.000">on the most popular of all time.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:56.000" end="00:05:59.000">Germans will click on "Tim's Favorites".</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:05:59.000" end="00:06:02.000">Americans don't care at all about my favorites.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:02.000" end="00:06:05.000">And I'll get into more details here,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:05.000" end="00:06:08.000">but in addition to CrazyEgg, I really just use Google Analytics.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:08.000" end="00:06:11.000">I don't get too fancy,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:11.000" end="00:06:14.000">because it is true that what you measure gets managed,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:14.000" end="00:06:17.000">but it's also true that you should only measure the things that matter.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:17.000" end="00:06:20.000">And Google can often send people down ratholes,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:20.000" end="00:06:23.000">making the analytics, at least—web site optimizers—</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:23.000" end="00:06:26.000">much, much better, will send people</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:26.000" end="00:06:29.000">down many different decision trees</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:29.000" end="00:06:32.000">spending a lot of time on things that don't necessarily have a huge impact.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:32.000" end="00:06:35.000">Frequency:</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:35.000" end="00:06:38.000">So, I've tested everything. Everything that I'm going to share with you today</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:38.000" end="00:06:41.000">I have come to realize through data.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:41.000" end="00:06:44.000">The best times for my particular blog</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:44.000" end="00:06:47.000">are 7 a.m. (Pacific Standard),</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:47.000" end="00:06:50.000">6 p.m. (Eastern Standard),</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:50.000" end="00:06:57.000">and those times also map to submissions to digg.com,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:06:57.000" end="00:07:00.000">not that that is necessarily up to me.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:00.000" end="00:07:03.000">But those, historically, are the best times.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:03.000" end="00:07:06.000">And in terms of days, I get the best response—</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:06.000" end="00:07:09.000">and best response meaning comments,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:09.000" end="00:07:12.000">quality of comments, trackbacks, and so forth—</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:12.000" end="00:07:16.000">on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:16.000" end="00:07:19.000">which was very unexpected.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:19.000" end="00:07:22.000">So posting—if I post on a Friday night,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:22.000" end="00:07:25.000">I get a very, very strong response on Saturdays.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:25.000" end="00:07:28.000">So if I have an important post,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:28.000" end="00:07:31.000">something that I really want to allow to germinate</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:31.000" end="00:07:35.000">and spread across the Interwebs, then I'll pick one of those three days.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:35.000" end="00:07:38.000">And I tend to post once or twice a week.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:38.000" end="00:07:41.000">I've done that since the very beginning,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:41.000" end="00:07:44.000">and while it's easy to say, "Well, your blog is successful</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:44.000" end="00:07:47.000">because you had a bestselling book," the fact of the matter is</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:50.000" end="00:07:53.000">All right. So let's move on.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:07:53.000" end="00:07:57.000">So these are some of my random findings.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:00.000" end="00:08:03.000">so hopefully, you'll find some questions,</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:03.000" end="00:08:06.000">some little tidbit of value here, even though </media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:12.000" end="00:08:17.000">Changing the "Categories" label to "Topics"</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:25.000" end="00:08:28.000">So the wording is very important.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:28.000" end="00:08:31.000">Do not underestimate the value of copy.</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:31.000" end="00:08:34.000">So just changing the label from "Categories" to "Topics"</media:text>

 <media:text type="plain" lang="en" start="00:08:34.000" end="00:08:38.000">dramatically improved the click density in that area,</media:text>
