When you head to the Appearance » Widgets menu, you'll notice that everything now looks and feels like the rest of the updated WordPress interface. That means the space you have can be used more effectively, and it's easier to tailor it to your needs. However many sidebars you have, you'll now see that they're all stacked up over here on the right, and you can open and close them down to free up space as you need it. The same goes for the windows over on the left here also, which will also resize according to the size of your browser window. One of the things you asked for was the ability to save the details of your widgets even when you change themes, and now you can, thanks to the Inactive Widgets pane just down here. If you change to a theme with its own default set of widgets or a different layout, your previous selections will all be stored down here in the Inactive Widgets panel. You can also use the panel to save items you might want to temporarily save for later use. Also, if you decide you'd like to set up a widget but not activate it right away, you can drag it directly down to the Inactive Widgets pane, and start adding your details. That means that later on, when you decide that you do want to use it, you can drag it straight into your sidebar, and it'll be ready to go. So if I wanted to set up a Pages widget, but didn't quite have the pages ready, I could come back some time later, and then drag them up to the sidebar, and all of the details are there—ready to go. Of course, I can also drag widgets across from one sidebar to another. All of the changes remain intact. Saving of the layout has now been completely automated, so as long as I save a particular widget's details, I don't need to make any more saves. And as it's possible to use multiple instances of the same widget, I can now see my own title next to the title of the widget type. So the first thing you're going to need to do is go to Upgrades and purchase the VideoPress upgrade if you don't have that already. You can use PayPal, or you can also use your credit card via PayPal to do this. Optionally, you can top up some extra space if you need to. So now, when I write a post, I click on this video icon, and I can bring in things from my media library, or I can upload a video directly, so I'm going to click on that, select a video, and that's going to upload for me. It's a good idea at this stage to add a title and any other meta information, because that's going to appear in the RSS feed of your video. I can also decide if I'd like people to not be able to share it by embedding, or the standard, which is that people can embed it. I can set a rating—now "G" is the standard, but obviously if you've got more mature content, you can change that here— and finally, I've got the shortcode for embedding, which I can actually copy here, should I want to email it to someone or something else like that. I can also access that same information by clicking on the "Embed" section of the video here where I've got the WordPress.com shortcode for other WordPress.com users, which I can copy right to my clipboard with that button. And also, the fuller embed code for people that are using self-hosted WordPress or other web pages, so the options are open there. You'll want to use this other one for anything other than a WordPress.com blog but it also means that you can share the video pretty much anywhere on the web. Once I'm happy with all that, I just need to click on "Insert Into Post" and I'm now going to see a small piece of shortcode in my post. It doesn't matter if it's the HTML or visual editor; the result that I'll get when I publish looks like this, with a full "HD On" button people can turn on to enter full HD mode, full-screen mode, so they can really take advantage of that high-definition video; and of course, the different embed options. Otherwise, you'll need to make one For the features we're looking at, you'll need a premiere or business account Once you're logged in, you'll see something like this and you'll want to click up here on "Merchant Services" Then you'll see a whole bunch of options, one of which is "Donations". Click on that. Put in a name here, either yours or one of your organization or blogs This what people will see when they come to the donate page And then, check out the customization options for the button that people will see when they click through to PayPal to make a donation. I can make it smaller, or choose to display credit card icons, or I can go ahead and add my own button image if I have something I'd prefer to use I can do that by uploading an image to my media library in WordPress, clicking "View" on the image, and then Right or Command-clicking to select "copy image address" or whatever your browser or operating system calls this feature. I then paste in the code I've copied here just like this. Once that's done I can set my currency and decide if folks can select their own amount, or if they'll use a fixed donation amount instead, like this And I might want to use this advanced customization option to add a message and set some rules for the person donating. Obviously the easier and friendlier I make it the more likely they are to go through with the donation As you can see, there are a whole bunch of customization options you can add here When you're done with those, click on the create button And from the two options I actually want to select the email tab, because the website one doesn't play nicely with WordPress.com I'm going to leave this page open, and then in a new tab or window, I'll open up WordPress and start a new post or page Now I'll switch to the HTML view and head for the WordPress.com support page about PayPal There's a link in the sidebar of this video or you can run a search for "WordPress.com support PayPal" in Google, for instance. There I'll find a bunch of different PayPal buttons I can use so I'm going to copy the code from here, and then put that into the HTML editor in WordPress - it has to be the HTML tab and not the "Visual Editor" If I want to use my own image, I can swap this part here with the URL of the image that I created earlier, like this So now, when I skip back to the visual editor I'll see either the PayPal button or the one I've created myself Now, back to the PayPal website where I have the link I want to copy I'll grab that, come back to WordPress and apply the link by selecting the image and using the link button in the visual editor If I want to add the button to my sidebar instead I could head back to the HTML tab copy the chunk of code here and then paste it into a Text widget Which I'll find in the Appearance > Widgets menu. First, I'll think of a title, and then decide how many categories you'd like to show as a maximum. Now, the least-used categories will appear smaller, and the most larger, and you can decide the percentage of how much more than normal they'll be smaller or larger. So, if I decide that 20 percent is going to be the smallest, they're going to be really tiny, and if I bump this up to 300 the larger categories are going to be huge. If I have sub-categories, I can also decide if I'm going to include them in the parent category, to bump that size up, or have them listed individually. Now, I can see that there's extreme numbers; I've just made the small ones unreadable, and the larger one stretches beyond the sidebar. So let's just tweak that down a little bit; I'm going to go for 200 for the maximum—that's two times the standard size— and 100 for the minimum. So now you'll see it's a lot more standardized, but I can see that Cinema has less posts than Japanese Art, for instance, and Superflat has significantly less than Uncategorized, which has the most. ]]> http://wordpress.tv/2009/07/17/add-user-ratings/feed/ 15 Michael Pick g Add User Ratings to your WordPress.com Posts, Pages & Comments Getting feedback from your site visitors can be an important part of blogging, and to make that even easier, we've added the PollDaddy Rating widget to WordPress.com. With the option to add user ratings to your posts, pages, comments, or any combination of those, the people visiting your blog can leave ratings on your content. So, how do you get set up? When you visit your blog's Dashboard, you'll now see a new menu option called "Ratings" just underneath the Comments menu and just above the Polls menu. Click on that, and you'll see some settings. Along the top here, we have three tabs: One for posts, one for pages, and another for comments. So, let's say I'm going to enable ratings on my posts. I click here on the checkbox, and the option to have them appear above or below each post is something I can choose from. I save, and now if I want to tweak things further, I can access Advanced Settings. I can choose between the common five-star rating system or the thumbs-up/thumbs-down "Nero" rating style. Then, I tweak—for instance—the size and color of the styles with a preview appearing over on the right. Ditto for the Nero-style hands. If I prefer, I can even put in the URL of a different image I prefer to use just here. Finally, I can change alignment, position, and various other styling options as well as being able to change the particular phrases used to describe the ratings my users have given a post, comment, or page. So, now that I'm happy with all that, I click on "Save Changes". I'm going to leave them off my pages, so I skip that and add them to comments, click here again, choose whether ratings will appear, and save. So, now I'm set up; let's have a look at a post. And here's some comments. So, as you can see, it's pretty easy, and adds an extra layer of interactivity to your blog content. Once I have some results, I can head to the second menu option, which will show me the ongoing results of people's voting. I can view ratings for posts, pages, or comments clicking on View Report, and also filter by the period of time I want to check ratings for. In this way, I can get a quick idea of what's been most popular this week, or across the entire life of my blog, which might in turn affect the decisions I make with my future content.
