  • What you’re missing if you don’t have your own WordPress

    WordCamp Europe 2025Speaker: Alex Kirk

June 7, 2025 — WordPress has lost some popularity for personal expression, as many people now prefer to just use social media accounts. However, many attendees at WordCamp still use WordPress for professional purposes. In this talk, I will show you what WordPress can offer for your personal online experience, as well as for your family and friends. By using a number of free community plugins, you can turn WordPress into:

    – Your own lightweight Mastodon instance that also supports RSS feeds and Bluesky through a bridge. Such an environment can act as a balance to platforms that try to keep you addicted to them. With the option to use Mastodon web and mobile apps, you can conveniently engage with your community without always needing to visit your WordPress site.
    – A personal bookmarking, read-it-later, and notes tool where you can save and organize content without having your data used for other purposes. You can even read your saved posts offline on your e-reader using a plugin.
    – A private space for friends and family, transforming your WordPress site into a private Wikipedia, a place to share family recipes, or a family diary for keeping stories, photos, and videos that might otherwise be forgotten in the scroll history of your messenger app. The support for Mastodon apps makes it easy for everyone to share, read, and communicate with each other.

Leave this talk inspired to create your own space on the web and contribute to a more decentralized internet without feeling the pressure to post something regularly that might come with a blog.

  • Accessibility in Reality: Pro Helvetia, a Swiss case study

    WordCamp Europe 2025Speaker: Jeff Chi

June 7, 2025 — There are many reasons to include accessibility in modern websites right from the start. A website, that everyone can access, enhances the user experience for all visitors – and for many sites this is actually a legal requirement.

In this talk, I will explain first-hand how we implement accessibility at our company “required” in our daily work. I will show techniques, tips and small touches that can have a large impact. Together, we will overcome the hesitation surrounding a topic that might seem like an overwhelming hurdle. And we will see how accessibility actually creates opportunities to build better websites for everyone.

Our example will be the new website for Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council, that we launched in 2024. I will also be presenting “Zugang für alle” (Access for all), an initiative that campaigns for accessibility in the digital space, which supported us with this project.

  • Content strategies that make everybody happy

    WordCamp Europe 2025Speaker: Marie-Charlotte Pezé

June 7, 2025 — I’ve had my share of difficult boyfriends, but none drove me to the brink of madness just as much as Google. Until I had an epiphany, and stopped trying to please a fickle algorithm to focus on something utterly revolutionary instead: fulfilling the needs of our readers. When you shift your mindset to producing high quality content, your audience uses it. Your commercial partners start to convert better. And your rankings and traffic naturally improve.

In this session, I will share the complex editorial and SEO strategies that I learned the hard way. They require insight on your audience, a well-defined business model, a lot of research, a variety of tools, and last but not least, some skillful writing. Hopefully, after hearing me ramble for 30 minutes, you’ll have a better idea how to publish great content that succeeds with your readers, your partners, and the Gods of Google.

  • Get your docs read! All the way to the end

    WordCamp Europe 2025Speaker: Mary Baum

June 7, 2025 — If more people read the docs, articles and blog posts that support your WordPress products, and read them all the way through, could you focus more on building and less on support? Or, put another way, how many of your support tickets come from people who missed a big point in your documentation, or maybe didn’t read past the first paragraph? (I’ve seen the blood and sweat—and money—you pour into those.)

Well, what if I told you there are five or six easy tweaks you can make to those documents, as well as your dev notes and blog posts, that will get more of your users to start reading them in the first place, and keep reading them all the way to the end? What if I told you those tweaks might make the writing more fun—and faster? (We use them on the Developer Blog) And what if, when people started reading all the things, your support efforts focused on finding REAL bugs? And your company, whether it’s just you or 100 people, had more energy to focus on building cool new stuff? Tell you what: come have some fun and find out.
