June 18, 2019 — Over the past five years, I’ve been running a weekly interview show featuring a new guest from the WordPress community every episode. In this presentation, I will showcase how we leveraged the AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) framework by Google, to increase our mobile traffic and help our business grow.

I will show how we integrated WordPress with AMP, the advantages and disadvantages, and how to start building an AMP template yourself.

June 14, 2019 — In 2017 Thomas spoke about how to plan a multilingual design site properly based on User Experience principles and some common sense (that perhaps wasn’t so common). This time around, he will show you how to setup a best practice multilingual site using WordPress. During his talk he will cover design, content, technical, and SEO considerations, among others.

June 14, 2019 — At the State of the Word, it was announced that one of the upcoming focuses of the WordPress project is raising the minimum version requirement of PHP.

June 14, 2019 — Data centers in the U.S. use more than 90 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year. That requires roughly 34 giant coal-powered plants. What can a single developer do to make more energy efficient code? I will go through a series of not-so-serious experiments showing how various implementations made with Raspberry PI web server and power meter affect power consumption. How much energy does enabling WordPress caching save? What about optimizing queries? I will tell.

June 11, 2019 — With the internet producing 2% of global carbon emissions and growing fast, it’s imperative that all web projects embrace efficiency in order to create a sustainable web for the future.

Having developed a carbon calculator to measure the carbon footprint of websites, we found that encouraging clients to embrace efficiency and commit to reducing their website emissions was surprisingly challenging. To help us understand why, we thought it only right that we practice what we preach and redesign our own website with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint as far as possible.

This is the story of what we learned in the process, told from the perspectives of a director, a designer and a developer involved in the project.

The outcome was a 75% reduction in carbon emissions, greatly improved page load speed and better user experience. We’ll show what we did in design and development, and how buy in from all stakeholders was crucial to success.
