In this candid and personal talk, Jill shares the stories of 10 lessons learned over 5 years while facilitating WordPress public speaking workshops for 50 countries.

These aren’t lessons from textbooks. They’re hard-earned insights gained from real-world experience and real interactions. Mixing humour and gravity, Jill tells about the triumphs and missteps of being a polite Canadian navigating culture, identity, language, and emotion on the global stage alongside real people with real challenges and very real hearts.

August 13, 2023 — Anyone is welcome to attend this event that is part of the Contributor Mentorship Pilot program. In this insightful talk, we will explore the world of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) within the WordPress community. Led by Jill Binder, the founder and lead of the Diverse Speaker Training Group (#WPDiversity), this session is designed to give attendees an understanding of DEIB for WordPress events (Meetups and WordCamps):

2. What does diversity mean in the context of WordPress?
3. Why does diversity matter at WordPress events?
4. Why do diverse speaker line-ups matter?

December 15, 2020 — This workshop is for people from marginalized or underrepresented groups who are thinking about speaking at online WordPress events. You do not need to have any experience in public speaking, and this workshop is for all levels of experience.

We talk a lot about writing your talk as a story, but how do you do that? Is it possible for a tech topic? We will cover some story-telling structures that work well for tech.

September 11, 2020 — This workshop is for people from marginalized or underrepresented groups who are thinking about speaking at online WordPress events. You do not need to have any experience in public speaking, and this workshop is for all levels of experience.

You’d love to have more diversity in your group, but folks are either not showing up – or they attend once and don’t come back. What can you do to foster, promote, and support diversity and an inclusive space? In this workshop, we’ll cover 5 topics: Shifting the way you think about diversity; how to attract and foster a diverse community; creating a welcoming environment, both in person and online; how to encourage more people from diverse backgrounds to step up to be speakers and leaders; and how to be a better ally. You will walk away with an action list to start making changes right away. This is not just for organizers, but anyone who wants to champion this kind of environment, now or in the future! Bring an electronic device or computer: We will be working with a workbook PDF and there will be an opportunity to anonymously submit those questions you’ve always wanted to know but been afraid to ask.
