August 31, 2018 — Having solved variations of same problem over and over again for clients that include a radio network with 60+ stations, one of largest Bay Area unicorns with a huge collection of geographically targeted blogs (among others), and a massively popular network of 5 enthusiast geek blogs, 10up finally put together its lessons learned and created Distributor.

Distributor is a free WordPress plugin that makes it easy to syndicate and reuse content across multiple websites — whether in a single multisite or across the web using the REST API.

There’s something for every publisher in this talk: UX design / problem solving, REST API use case, content strategy, SEO best practice (for content reuse), tools for managing websites, and even developer tips.

August 30, 2018 — In this workshop-style presentation I cover the concepts of internationalisation, the three core steps needed to internationalise your WordPress plugin or theme, some best practices, and advanced considerations to make the lives of your translators easier.

August 30, 2018 — While speaking about accessibility I’ve realised that for some people the key to understanding why accessibility is so important comes from experiencing how people with disabilities actually use the websites we build. So I’ll be demoing two pieces of assistive technology (AT): 1) Dragon NaturallYSpeaking – voice recognition software and NVDA – a screen reader. 1) Dragon NaturallySpeaking is voice recognition software, typically used by people with motor impairments who are unable to use mouse or keyboard or touch. I’ll demonstrate how people move around within pages, follow links, deal with internet forms, and can emulate mouse movements when they need to. 2) NVDA is a screen reader typically used by those who are blind, or have poor vision, but also sometimes by those with cognitive impairments such as dyslexia. I’ll demonstrate what you hear when a page first loads, how people move around a page, how they can find information they are looking for in pages, how they follow links, and interact with forms and dropdown menus. Along the way we’ll see the challenges faced by users of these products if sites are not well created.

August 30, 2018 — In this talk we’ll discuss how the Gutenberg editing model differs from the traditional WordPress flow and what implications that has on people wanting to augment and transform content. We’ll also take look at new possibilities for enhancing the editor itself with interactive controls and integrations into external services.
We’ll focus on what this means to the developer writing new plugins or updating existing ones to support and enhance the editing experience, what we can now do that we previously couldn’t, and how the application design guides extensibility.
