August 7, 2017 — Red8 Interactive builds custom WordPress themes for design agencies across the country. Several of our customers have told us that they are no longer designing websites because they can’t make money on the projects. In fact they frequently lose money. The presentation is a reaction to this. It’s based on our experiences and presents an approach that will lead to profitable projects. With a few changes to their process a website project can be profitable. But it does require change.

June 29, 2017 — WP-CLI, a tool not too familiar by many developers, and that is a shame. WP-CLI can speed up your development and maintenance time a lot by just typing a few commands in the terminal.

June 21, 2017 — Website development companies have long struggled with the challenge of getting website content from clients in a timely manner. This causes a variety of problems for web development and programming companies including mismatched expectations, extended project timelines, excessive client communication, delayed project payment timelines, and in some cases unhappy clients. In some cases this can also lead to websites that are ineffective because although the design is functional, the content fails to compel the site visitor to take. During this presentation we will explore a variety of tools, best practices, and strategies that website development agencies can test and implement to help overcome this challenge

June 17, 2017 — Boing Boing is one of the longest running independent publications on the Internet. From our start as ‘zine to our currently self-hosted WordPress site, we’ve had our ass kicked by every platform we’ve tried. WordPress doesn’t have me in a murderous rage, but that is largely because the guys at WP VIP are so good at sorting out the weird and often suicidal things we do to ourselves. Actually, some issues with 2FA, and our cookies expiring weirdly leave me kinda frustrated… but hey, at least Google can crawl the site this week!
June 16, 2017 — No offense, but most local development environments are overkill. Vagrant is great if you want to match your site’s production environment, but it can often be fussy, and slow to spin up. Docker runs faster and is more lightweight, but it can be hard to get up and running if you’re not intimately familiar with how containers work.
Laravel’s Valet project is a simplified, local, PHP development environment for minimalists that uses lightweight packages—not virtual machines— to speed up development time.
In this session I will demonstrate how to install Valet, show off some of the features that make it so useful for WordPress developers, and share some power user tricks that I’ve learned while using it.
June 5, 2017 — Creating high quality content before designing and developing a custom WordPress site can be the difference between a successful project and one that goes over budget, wastes time and leaves everyone feeling frustrated. Unfortunately, the reality is that clients underestimate the enormous task of writing and editing and aggregating the right content.
After some trial and error, our team at Big Room Studios has worked to incorporate content gathering, writing and editing into every part of the web development process.
I’ll go over how we incorporate content creation into:
1. The sales process
2. Client intake and education
3. Wireframing and Information Architecture
4. Development sprints
5. Final writing and editing before launch
June 4, 2017 — A case study on using Docker to develop from multiple machines. Covering docker-compose, docker files, basic commands and a few clever nginx hacks to round things out.
