Design in the absence of content is not design, it’s decoration.” – Jeffrey Zeldman We’ve all heard that content is king, yet when it comes to designing web experiences we’re still stuck with lorem ipsum and placeholder images, as though the real content didn’t matter. We’re still designing web experiences from the top down, starting with the desktop view of the homepage, even though they’re more likely to be experienced from the bottom up – starting with a content detail page on a mobile device. Designing from the content out means starting with atomic elements of content, and building a system of components and layouts based on the real structure of content.
September 29, 2015 — We all like to see stats on how our site is doing – but without context, the numbers don’t tell us very much. What we really care about are milestones – the story about what’s happening on the site and why. You want to know when a new blog post you’ve written gets promoted on social media and causes a traffic surge on your site. You want to know when a product in WooCommerce suddenly stops selling – and more importantly why it stopped selling.
In this talk we explore the types of meaningful data and context you want to harvest from your site, and discuss techniques for setting up intelligent alerts to give you not just data about what’s happening – but context to tell you why it’s happening, and why it matters.
September 29, 2015 — Even as WordPress continues to globalize, many theme and plugin authors still do not implement internationalization/localization functions into their code; for one of two reasons. One, perhaps they simply don’t realize it’s a “thing” – I hope this presentation will change that fact. Two, they’re afraid of learning the ins and outs of the necessary functions because it can seem confusing at first – I hope this presentation will demonstrate how easy it can be.
In this presentation I’ talk about why i18n/l10n is important, use examples that show how to use many of the more common translation functions, and with luck get more developers to use them in their products in the future.
