May 22, 2023 — 2022 was remarkable for the explosion of GenerativeAI technologies. DALL-E, MidJourney and Stable Diffusion blew our minds with their ability to generate images from text prompts.

Then ChatGPT came along and totally blew up the internet. We’ve seen all sorts of daily tools integrate these new generative AI technologies; from Github’s CoPilot through Notion and even CodeWP – a specialist WordPress code generator.

In this talk, David will explain briefly how these technologies work and how they fit into the broader landscape of both AI and technology trends more broadly. He’ll then cover some of the most impressive and coolest examples of the technology in use today.

This all sets the stage to discuss how GenerativeAI and WordPress intersect. These are technologies that will have a direct impact on the entire array of WordPress stakeholders, right from developers through to end users of WordPress-powered sites. As with any disruptive technology, we will see opportunities and threats. David will help the audience think more precisely about this disruption and how they might best maneuver to enjoy the benefits and avoid the downsides.

May 22, 2023 — We all know we should be using Strong Passwords and Two-Factor to protect our online accounts, but following best practices isn’t always easy. Teaching clients that they need to be using a distinct strong password on all their sites plus a password manager to keep track of all of them has already been difficult. And while Two-Factor protects against nearly all attempts to hack your accounts, it’s even harder to convince clients to use it.

Luckily, the fine folks at the FIDO Alliance have been working hard at this problem for years. WebAuthn is a comprehensive standard to let users log into apps & websites without needing to user a password or a two-factor code. With WebAuthn you can log in using authentication methods built into your device like Face ID, Touch ID, or Windows Hello.

Passkeys is the latest version of this standard and it promises to deliver a simpler and even more secure way of getting signed in. In this talk, we’ll explore the different ways hackers can break into your user accounts. Them, we’ll explore how you can use passkeys across the web and to protect your WordPress website.

The number of people actively trying to reduce their digital footprint has increased thanks to the rising awareness and concerns about their privacy in recent years. Even still, a lot of websites are yet to comply with these laws for various reasons, and non-compliance with these laws can potentially invite heavy fines.

So it becomes vital that WordPress, which is powering about 40% of the internet, leads by example in protecting user data privacy at its core – not just for complying with the law but also for putting users first and building their trust.
