November 21, 2015 — Accessibility is often thought of in terms of visual accessibility; however designing and developing for accessibility means considering auditory, cognitive, and motor abilities as well. As we age, our sight, hearing, motor, and cognitive abilities decline, meaning when an audience is comprised of a significant number of older individuals we must consider the full spectrum of accessibility when we design. Further, at this time, older individuals are much more likely to be less technically savvy, which introduces another set of usability and content needs. Erin will frame this topic within an experience of designing a website for a small non-profit club that contains a significant number of older and technically un-savvy individuals… as well as a significant number of younger technically savvy individuals.
November 18, 2015 — LeeAnn will give you a brief overview on the principles of accessible front-end design and show you how easy it is to start building a better web experience for everyone. We will cover what accessibility means in WordPress design and development, 10 simple steps to audit a website for accessibility and I will provide you with tools and tips on how to easily add accessibility into your workflow. You will walk away with a better understanding of how you may be excluding certain users from your sites and immediate actions to prevent it from happening.
October 7, 2015 — “Web Accessibility is not just for developers, there are plenty of things people can do to get involved. This presentation will focus on the different ways you can contribute to Web Accessibility and how you can help spread the word. We will cover some Web Accessibility fundamentals and why it’s important. From there we will go over the various ways you can communicate and increase exposure to Web Accessibility using various terms and avenues. Next we will discuss WordPress Accessibility specifically and the different aspects surrounding it. Finally, we will go over the different ways you can contribute to WordPress Accessibility.
It’s well-known that there is power in numbers, so the more we can advocate the more we can evoke change.

Likewise, roughly 8% of men and 0.5% of women have some form of color blindness. Many government contracts are beginning to require websites to be accessible and many companies who are not legally required to build accessible websites are starting to do it regardless. August 6, 2015 — The focus of this presentation is making a WordPress theme more accessible for those with disabilities. This presentation is programming specific, and cover various HTML and CSS requirements to ensure any WordPress theme is accessibility-ready. I cover accessible images, media, link text, headings, keyboard navigation, colour contrast, skip links, and forms; and how a developer can program these aspects to meet WCAG 2.0 Guidelines.
July 27, 2015 — The focus of my presentation is on WordPress and website accessibility; from a front-end perspective. First, I will explain what web accessibility is and why it is important. To continue, I will discuss AODA and Section 508 regulations for Canada and the United States. Then, I will go over some key WCAG 2.0 compliancy requirements a developer will need to ensure the websites they develop are fully accessible. From there, I will showcase a few web accessibility tools, then some WordPress accessibility tools and tips.
