December 15, 2016 — Learn the tricks designers use to make websites attractive and effective. We’ll teach you the Most Important Question designers ask their clients, and how you can use it to your advantage when doing it yourself. Then, learn practical ways to apply it to create attractive sites (using good design principles and simple rules for success) and effective sites (through basic exercises that help you develop and showcase your primary call to action).
December 14, 2016 — I will discuss a user-oriented design approach from the perspective of a social scientist, rather than a designer or developer. Based on my experiences as a project manager and practicing anthropologist, I will cover what an understanding of human behavior and practice has to offer on the topics of user interface, user experience, and usability design.

December 12, 2016 — Products and services can be designed to be exclusive or inclusive — it’s a conscious choice, and it’s often about the traditional tradeoffs of quality, price, and deadlines to achieve greater margins and profitability. However, computational products and services have ushered in a new world where we can now ship products instantaneously at marginal costs close to zero — which brings unprecedented and immediate accessibility to the largest total addressable market imaginable via the Internet. It means that the nature of design needs to change, and also the way we think of *who* we are designing for needs to change. I’ve just begun this journey within the WordPress universe, and I’ll be sharing what I’ve gathered thus far on how more inclusive approaches to design are the key to better designed products and service in tech.

How do we create teams that value open participation by employees with different perspectives and personalities?
This talk will at empathy, intersectionality and other concepts as the relate to building and maintaining strong teams.
December 11, 2016 — Sometimes it seems like the world is full of experiences designed for robots not the humans that use them. Experiences that leave us frustrated, lost and disconnected. That are almost designed to bring out the worst human traits. Shouldn’t we really be focused on creating experiences that connect with users?
Experiences that move, that enable, that allow us to be the best humans we can be. In this talk I’ll look at the problem of design that isn’t created for humans and offer some insight into how we can begin to design for humans not robots.
