July 5, 2018 — Leading a cross-functional group of skilled individuals from all around the world, in front of their computers, hands on the keyboard, a headset on, solving together complex problems in a limited timeframe.

This description covers my activities for the past ten years, from online gaming to the WordPress community, to my work at Automattic.

Technology has blurred the lines between playing, working, and contributing to an open source project, I will use my experience leading a distributed team to show you how to professionally grow while having fun, and giving back to the community that changed your life.

April 12, 2018 — I was about 20 when I started to contribute. I only quickly touched on what my motivation was. It is important to know what your motivation is to contribute. You do not get any financial gain from contributing.

January 24, 2018 — This talk will explore my experience being married to open source. I will also explore the ways the communities support each other through initiatives such as CMS Garden (An initiative to promote all major open source CMS projects). I will also share the top things I learned about myself and the combined future of an open source web.

January 10, 2018 — Open-source has a major impact on our lives, from small things to big. You know… the ATM you’re using daily for routine payments, the mobile phone you can’t leave aside for at least 5 minutes, the web browser you’re opening to read this now; all of them flourished because we worked together for a common purpose. They ease your existence more than you realize.

But what if open-source never existed? Have you ever asked yourself this question? I have, and I even pictured the world without it. Which is exactly what I am going to talk about in my presentation at WordCamp Ahmedabad 2017.

December 15, 2017 — Open Source can be a great foundation for building a business. That being said, keeping the balance between community building and commercial activities can be tricky. In this talk I want to share my experience and practical tips, which can help you leverage OS and boost your business, while meeting fantastic people and learning a lot in the process.

December 10, 2017 — As members of the WordPress community, we have a unique opportunity to contribute to making the news better. WordPress powers news sites of all shapes and sizes – from small investigative teams, to large national publications. What they share in common is a reliance on open source tools developed in the WordPress community. However you want to improve the news – whether that’s making it more trustworthy, more accessible, more engaging, or something else entirely – the journalism community would love your help!

We’ll take a look at plugins and themes used in journalism and the impact each has on readers. We’ll identify areas for improvement, and simple ways that everyone can get involved – from documentation, to translation, and (of course) development. Everyone has the ability to help build the future of WordPress, and I hope you’ll leave feeling inspired to get involved!

December 10, 2017 — TinyMCE is the world’s most popular open source library for online WYSIWYG editing of HTML. It is used by millions of applications, including WordPress.

Although first established in 2004, it was not until 2015 that the team behind TinyMCE began trying to commercialize it and build a business behind the open source project. What is the best way to make money from open source? Support, commercial licenses premium add-ons or hosting? And how do you avoid alienating the open source community? In this talk, learn what has worked and what hasn’t in the past two years.
