March 16, 2017 — …and made me more valuable as a writer. I detest feeling stupid and for years refused to dive into new technology because it always frustrated me. Teaching myself the basics of navigating WP as a user cured me of any technofear. It made me more confident also made me more valuable as a copywriter because I understood how websites are put together, know what is possible, how all the parts of digital marketing (should) work together. The ability to “speak the language” of design, basic development, and organic SEO means I can set higher fees. And that is a good thing.
March 15, 2017 — The REST API is THE hot topic right now and almost every WordCamp in the past couple of years has featured talks aimed at developers who want to use it. But what does it mean for people who don’t have the skills to interact with it or aren’t able to ‘learn javascript. Deeply’? In this talk I’ll look at what the REST API means for the future of WordPress for non developers and beginner developers, and outline the opportunities it gives all of us and the way it might change the way non-developers work with WordPress in the future.
March 15, 2017 — I built my first large WordPress site five years ago and just completed rebuilding that very same website. In rebuilding this site I have had the unique opportunity to rethink many of the same problems that presented themselves before and also to reevaluate the work I did the first time around.
This talk will cover a range of beginner mistakes I made in the first build and the way approached solving these same problems now. We’ll also talk about how some changes I’ve made to the new site are a result of trends and technology changes over time.
Overall, this talk is for anyone who is getting started with building WordPress sites with complex data structures and requirements. My hope is that you’ll learn some of the lessons I learned the hard way the easy way!
January 30, 2017 — Some of the reasons WordPress is the most popular web development platform in the world is it’s ease of use, and it’s ability to use themes.
These features also makes it possible for complete beginners(with a little guidance) to create their very own professional looking website in a single day.
This session outlines the steps and activities that should be covered by a complete beginner to create their own website in just one day.
January 25, 2017 — This session will be about WordPress basics. Opening up with how I stumbled upon WordPress community on the Internet leading to the birth of http://www.winstontony.com. This talk is CENTRED around demystifying the age old myth that one needs to be a born pro to run a word press site. In a nut shell I will take the audience through blogging passion, getting started, setting your site and basic back office, posting and issues of frequency, Social sharing just to mention a few. I use my personal blog to reiterate the aspect of alternative career informed by the high rate of unemployment on Kenya and Africa at large. That will mark my closing remarks.
When people ask me about WordPress normally I tell them I am self taught. (some say self made) from stumbling on WordPress to turning into an Internet nomad as a career to building a business around the aspect of blogging, it’s been a story of learning one curve at a time. It’s journey in progress. Like everyday friends and Internet strangers ask me to help out with WordPress related tasks. I do with an open heart. I have spoken previously at the Amref child development Centre (by Amref Foundation) about blogging. Recently I spoke at the Road to Nairobi Event in Nairobi organised by Ye community and Building Bridges Initiative. On frequent basis I speak about blogging to community based groups am involved with as part of TWIC GROUP undertakings.
January 25, 2017 — I will share rich and easy to understand content that will help my audience start and market their blogs online through Search Engine Optimization. I’ll articulate the steps required for one to start a successful niche blog at home. I have been doing SEO for the past 10 years. I was one of the trainers at Livity Africa which was running a Digital Skill Training Program sponsored by Google.
