October 23, 2015 — This talk will highlight the many different ways to give back to Core WordPress. At a high level I will go over the core trac ticketing system and how to talk within tickets. I will even be diving into Vagrant and show how to set up a development environment and create a patch. This talk will take some of the ambiguity out of contributing to Core and focus mainly on teaching how to do the little things that lead to bigger impacts.
October 12, 2015 — When someone tells you that anyone can contribute to WordPress you may not believe them, but in this talk I will show you how this is true.
Jenny will show you how you do not have to be a developer to contribute back to the open source project we all love so much, explain the different ways this is possible, how to set up and upcoming events that makes contributing back so easy.
This talk is aimed anyone, regardless of skill set and ability, who has not contributed to the WordPress project or any open source project before.

September 25, 2015 — I was a mild-mannered developer until that fateful day: the day I submitted my first patch to WordPress. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, it was that moment that would begin to change the way I thought about development, community, and what it meant to be a contributor to an Open Source project.
My contributions to WordPress have taken the form of talks, patches, code reviews, and documentation, but they’ve nearly all started in the same place: solving a problem that I (or someone close to me) had at the time. Together we’ll learn some ways for you to find a way to become a contributor and, just maybe, help scratch someone else’s itch at the same time.

This flash talk explains what lead to that and how a team of amazing WordPress contributors who translate the software in hundreds of languages made that leap possible. It clarifies the terms internationalization (i18n) and localization (l10n) and explains the benefits of writing translation-ready plugins and themes. It also gives useful tips on how to get started contributing to the WordPress Polyglots team.

But after about an hour of viewing core tickets, if you were like me, you left without contributing. Why? Because it is super overwhelming at first, and like me, you may have felt very out of place. But there are other ways to contribute! The WordPress TRT (Theme Review Team) may be the perfect fit for your contributions to WordPress.org. In this talk, we will go over what it takes to be on the TRT, and what reviewing themes is all about.
