March 20, 2020 — Oft herrscht die Vorstellung vor, um an einem großen Open-Source-Projekt wie WordPress mitzuarbeiten zu können, müsste man zumindest ein Informatikstudium erfolgreich absolviert haben – genau mit diesem Trugschluss will Ulf Schönefeld aufräumen. Ziel ist es das Projekt WordPress und die dahinterstehende Community beim Termin näherzubringen. Wie sind selbige organisiert, was sind sinnvolle Anlaufstellen und welche Möglichkeiten bestehen sich dort einzubringen; selbst gesetzt dem Fall, dass man von technischen Dingen wie PHP, HTML, CSS oder JavaScript so überhaupt gar keine Ahnung hat.

December 31, 2019 — It’s no secret that one of the WordPress core team’s greatest barriers to entry is contributors feeling like they don’t have anything of value to offer; nothing could be further from the truth.

Every potential contributor has something to offer whether they realize it or not, and this session will give them many of the tools and advice they’ll need to succeed in helping to influence the future of WordPress.

Topics covered: entry points for contributors of all levels, whether they’re developers, designers, copywriters, or everyday users. We’ll briefly cover the process of joining the “Making WordPress” community, methods to have your voice heard, submitting patches and keeping trac tickets moving, bringing core down to the local community level, and more.

January 18, 2019 — This talk is for you – even if you haven’t attended a contributor day before. The session will highlight benefits of contributing, provide recommendations on how to find your spot and build trust, and give insights on which traits are particularly valuable to have or pick up. You will furthermore learn how contributing to core is by far not only about writing code. The goal of this session is to prepare you for a beneficial long-term relationship as a core contributor so that you can make a significant impact over time.

December 30, 2018 — In the day and age where “posting something” has become an everyday affair to many, with so many different choices in software, tools and platforms — what does it mean to choose WordPress as a publishing tool teaching material in Higher Education? How easy or difficult do students find? What can contributors learn from it?
I have been working at a university for over seven years as a staff (in-house webmaster/developer), but never thought of teaching the students. This summer, I had an opportunity to co-teach undergraduate art students about online self-publishing using WordPress.
I have been contributing to WordPress over a decade, and I would like to share my experiences and thoughts in teaching, from a contributor’s point-of-view.

June 25, 2018 — Nous sommes nombreux à travailler depuis loooongtemps avec WordPress.

Mais il y a pour l’instant encore assez peu de français qui ont contribué au core. Peu de confrères connaissent aussi vraiment le fonctionnement des releases. Des confrères d’autres pays ont bien compris l’intérêt de contribuer à cet écosystème, et nous aurions tout à gagner à les imiter.

Lors de ce talk, je vous propose de vous présenter le fonctionnement du core, de l’équipe de développement de WordPress, des releases et surtout vous expliquer comment vous préparer techniquement (et psychologiquement ?) à rentrer dans le cœur de votre CMS favori.

L’idée est donc de vous montrer comment contribuer au core (que vous soyez développeur front, back, designer, chef de projet ou tout autre métier du web), mais aussi de vous expliquer pourquoi vous devriez vous y intéresser et y participer dès aujourd’hui.

En restant passif devant le développement des logiciels open-source sur lesquels notre activité professionnelle repose, nous sommes contraints de suivre le mouvement. En y participant, il devient possible d’anticiper son évolution et donc d’en tirer parti à long terme. À court terme, on découvre aussi toute une panoplie de technologies et de process de développement très enrichissants professionnellement : workflow, review, tests unitaires…

June 22, 2017 — If you’re a WordPress user, you may be aware of the “Five for the future” concept, in which WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg has suggested that companies wanting to give something back to WordPress should dedicate 5% of their resources to contributing in some way.

Contributing to WordPress doesn’t mean you have to speak PHP. While helping the WordPress community appears skewed towards those with programming know-how, there are many other valuable ways you can make your mark.

In this Panel Discussion our Panelist along with the Moderator will help you look at why it’s a good idea to contribute to WordPress and examine some of the ways in which you can make your contribution.

May 17, 2017 — Pourquoi contribuer à WordPress et qu’est-ce que cela m’apporte ? Je ne suis pas développeur, comment puis-je contribuer ? Je ne parle pas anglais, comment faire ?

À travers mon expérience personnelle, je vais tenter de démystifier l’acte de la contribution et renforcer cette notion qui dit qu’il faut donner pour recevoir ; que ça vaut carrément le coup, car ce que l’on reçoit en retour est parfois inattendu !

Je vous parlerai des différentes voies de contribution à WordPress — le code, certes, mais aussi la documentation, le design, le mobile, l’accessibilité, la traduction, le support, les thèmes et les extensions, l’expérience utilisateur et la communauté — ainsi que des astuces, outils et ressources.

Confucius a dit : « La personne qui déplace une montagne commence par déplacer les petites pierres. » J’espère qu’après cette présentation, vous n’hésiterez plus à apporter vos petites pierres au projet WordPress et à sa communauté.
