December 10, 2017 — If there is passion for innovation, things get done. This is often true for the WordPress Open Source project and smaller projects within.
The WCEU design team set a tall goal this year, beyond the usual design work for the event. We decided it was time to make creating and customizing a WordCamp site easy and intuitive, so we released a new WordCamp default theme for all. I’d like to share our goals, design consideration, and how we released the CampSite 2017 theme beta just before the event.
December 7, 2017 — The German web design market is huge and very attractive for many foreign agencies and freelancers. But make sure you know the rules and legal regulations of the German web design business to avoid a lot of trouble and unhappy clients.
Frank is web designer and WordPress developer from Münster, Germany.
November 28, 2017 — Visual design should work toward the site’s goals, but many of us came to WordPress without a background in design. How then can you select, modify, or build a theme with confidence that your design choices will be engaging and effective?
We’ll take a brief tour of web design fundamentals, and examine how contrast, hierarchy, white space, line length, and color selection can help you avoid design blunders and get a solid design every time.
November 28, 2017 — With seemingly endless new ways to browse the web, we know that responsive design is here to stay. But how do we adapt the traditional design process to flexible screen sizes, device-based restrictions, and multiple use-cases without feeling like we’re giving up all control to the great unknown? We’ll learn how to use our Problem Solving Superpowers to move away from creating endless mockups, and into crafting Design Systems. You’ll learn actionable methods to transform how you design for the web, and workable ways to present these designs to your team or your client.

October 23, 2017 — Design is a broad specification with many disciplines, and naturally, with such an expansive set of tools, practices and thought processes, it can feel seemingly impossible to define. As a result, some have sought to create tightly controlled representations of what “design actually is”. However, this line of thinking is … quite frankly, BS, and can be to our detriment in the ever evolving design landscape; leaving design out of some rather important and influential conversations, when it could (should) have a bigger role in general. Why? Because design plays a role in pretty much everything we do.
In this talk Joe will discuss the importance of designers embracing their role as empathy dealers, and the core areas in which the need for designers to engage is more important than ever.
October 19, 2017 — Good design is important no matter what the medium. Making the transition from print to web has been an ongoing and evolving education. There are certain constants as well as plenty of differences between the two. I’d like to share some of the things I’ve learned as a designer that will help others who feel like the learning curve is overwhelming. I’m a graphic designer who will likely never write original code, so WordPress has made the web a friendlier, more inviting place for me to work. Once a print piece is on press, at the bindery and then sent to the mailhouse, there’s a definite finality to the process, which is completely different than the web.
October 19, 2017 — User Experience (UX) design is such a hot industry today with no shortage of Medium articles telling you how to break into UX. There’s detailed talk about portfolios, which courses to take, and whether designers should learn how to code, among others. What they seem to miss, though, is the ‘getting started’ part: How do you do a design project and ensure that it gets from discovery all the way to deployment? If design portfolios are about the projects that you’ve brought to life, then how do we do them and build them well?
In this session, we will be looking at the design process and the Elements of User Experience. We will be reviewing the milestones inside web projects and the activities that make it successful. You will learn what makes great websites great, and what makes designers advocates for their own work.
Design is finally having its golden age. Will you be a part of it?
October 13, 2017 — Many of us build website for clients – most of us even get paid for it…
There is a lot of money in freelancing. There is also a lot of pain and frustration.
Ever wish you could just ask someone how they did it? You can! Our panel has been there, done that, has the t-shirt, scars, and lessons learned to share with you.
With any luck you can learn from their mistakes and avoid making a few of them yourself!
