You’ll need to begin by starting a new post (or editing an existing one) by going to Posts > New Post or Posts > Edit.

Very helpful. Yet I’m still searching. Want to change my very first post from the “uncategorized” list and can’t seem to do it!

You’ll want to make sure that you’ve created another category. You should be able to change the category of a post by unchecking “Uncategorized” and checking another category.

So, what is the purpose of categories?

Categories make it easier for people to navigate your content by grouping posts together thematically. You might want to check out this video primer on categories and tags, Lorelle’s presentation on effective use of categories or some of our WordPress.com support documentation for more information.
