December 12, 2018 — If you are a WordPress plugin or theme author, you probably have mixed feelings about the WordPress Support Forums. For many, they are a necessary evil of the WordPress product developer experience. While they are limited, the advantages they offer far outweigh the disadvantages when tackled well.

I’ve been providing support on the WP.org support forums for over 5 years for a wide variety of plugins. I’ll share my experiences and provide insight and tools that will make you a believer both in free support and in the value the .org support forums can provide to you and your business.

Attendees will gain a deeper knowledge of all the resources the WP.org Support Forums offer. They will also learn of new tools at their disposal to offer more effective technical support for their users on the .org forums.

December 11, 2018 — La tipografía es una disciplina del diseño gráfico que estudia la composición de los textos en armonía con las imágenes y otros elementos. Tradicionalmente, en diseño editorial, los tipógrafos se han ocupado de conseguir composiciones perfectamente equilibradas y legibles, para que el lector las percibiera como agradables y fáciles de leer. Durante años ha sido muy difícil conseguir esto mismo en diseño web, ya que la tecnología no lo permitía.

En los últimos años y gracias a tecnologías como OpenType o las webfonts, se mejora mucho el panorama, pero no se consiguen grandes avances, ya que se valora más la velocidad de carga de la web que su aspecto visual.

Hoy, utilizando fuentes variables, podemos conseguir que los textos de una web se adapten al contexto del lector o usuario, para que sean más legibles y atractivos, consiguiendo un gran rendimiento, sin sacrificar la velocidad de carga de la web.

Las fuentes variables cambian sus propiedades —como el ancho o el peso, por ejemplo— ¡utilizando un único archivo!

Se espera que las fuentes variables sean totalmente utilizables en los navegadores a lo largo de este año, por lo que veremos cómo se utilizan en WordPress (código CSS) y qué ventajas tienen respecto a las demás fuentes. También veremos ejemplos reales de aplicación de fuentes variables y cómo se crea una fuente variable.
