October 5, 2018 — Thorsten first provides a high-level overview of unit testing in general, and classifies it in terms of test level, and testing methods and techniques. He then explores and explains different possible units. The second part of the talk is dominated by one of the key principles of unit testing: testing in isolation. What is it? How can it be done? What is this mocking that pops up here and there? Next, Thorsten shows different unit test examples, involving both PHP and JavaScript, and highlighting different (yet simplified) aspects of real-life code. Thorsten concludes with a few tips for writing good unit tests.

October 5, 2018 — Soon after the release of WordPress 15 years ago, support for internationalization was added to the software. This meant that themes, plugins, and WordPress itself could be translated. This was a huge deal as WordPress is used all over the world, in countries where English is not the main language. WordPress was quickly translated into German, Japanese and many more languages.

Over the years, WordPress has steadily improved the way we have to work with internationalization. However, challenges still exist and there will always be new ones ahead. Projects like Gutenberg and ecosystems beyond WordPress.org force us to continuously iterate.

In this talk you’ll learn how to make use of the latest and greatest technology to make your WordPress plugin or theme fully internationalized. Pascal is going to highlight how you can leverage the powers of WordPress, GlotPress, and WP-CLI to improve the translation workflow in your WordPress projects.

October 4, 2018 — Gutenberg, the elephant in the room. The impending feature to be merged into Core which will not only change the way millions of people work with WordPress, but has the audacious goal of shaping the way people publish and manage content on the web.

Some people may say that Gutenberg is merely WordPress catching up to other services, but in reality the new editor experience not only changes the way writers write, but also the way engineers create rich, editorial experiences specifically tailored to each unique site requirements.

WordPress 5.0+ goals are not to “catch up”, but rather leapfrog other experiences and shape content creation and the editorial experience forever.

After Brexit, it’ll still effect how we handle customers in the EU’s data. The 100ish page GDPR covers all sorts of telecommunications and electronic data so this talk aims to tell web designers and developers the essentials they need to know in an easy to digest format so that they can help their clients (and themselves) stay inline with the legal requirements, from discussing considerations for big databases through to simple newsletter sign ups.
