October 1, 2015 — Jetpack brings features from WordPress.com that either need cloud infrastructure or aren’t ripe for core to your site. But did you know it has over 400 action and filter hooks allowing you to trick it out to you and your client’s delights?

In this session, we’ll look at some of the features of Jetpack, examples of how they can be extended, and how to request added flexibility if you’ve found something we haven’t added hooks to yet!

  • Kyle Bondo: Monsters of WordPress

    WordCamp Asheville 2015Speaker: Kyle Bondo

September 30, 2015 — The WordPress Multisite — what I call Monster Sites — is an often misunderstood creature. There is plenty of documented reasons why you should never use it, and beyond the knowledge of how to install and administer a Monster Site, there is little understanding of what it should and should not be used for. Often, it is only when a developer ventures into using a Monster Site installation do they find out just why “monster” is an appropriate label. Without proper planning or preparation for its use, a multisite installation can be a disaster waiting to happen. But what if you could prevent a multisite from becoming a monster by knowing why certain configurations work better than others? This is why I would like to approach WordPress Multisite from a strategic point-of-view by illustrating potential strategies, industries those strategies could serve, and some lessons learned in experimenting with some of these strategies. Additionally, I would like to describe these approaches without the interference of heavy, technical details in anticipation of a broad audience. My hope is that I can help start a new conversation regarding a more strategic use of WordPress Multisite and tame Monster Sites once and for all!

  • John Eckman: Design from the Content Out

WordCamp Rhode Island 2015Speaker: John Eckman

September 30, 2015 — “Content precedes design. Design in the absence of content is not design, it’s decoration.” – Jeffrey Zeldman We’ve all heard that content is king, yet when it comes to designing web experiences we’re still stuck with lorem ipsum and placeholder images, as though the real content didn’t matter. We’re still designing web experiences from the top down, starting with the desktop view of the homepage, even though they’re more likely to be experienced from the bottom up – starting with a content detail page on a mobile device. Designing from the content out means starting with atomic elements of content, and building a system of components and layouts based on the real structure of content.

  • RC Lations: Tracking Meaningful Moments on Your Site

WordCamp Rhode Island 2015Speaker: RC Lations

September 29, 2015 — We all like to see stats on how our site is doing – but without context, the numbers don’t tell us very much. What we really care about are milestones – the story about what’s happening on the site and why. You want to know when a new blog post you’ve written gets promoted on social media and causes a traffic surge on your site. You want to know when a product in WooCommerce suddenly stops selling – and more importantly why it stopped selling.
In this talk we explore the types of meaningful data and context you want to harvest from your site, and discuss techniques for setting up intelligent alerts to give you not just data about what’s happening – but context to tell you why it’s happening, and why it matters.

  • Dave McHale: Introduction to i18n/l10n

WordCamp Rhode Island 2015Speaker: Dave McHale

September 29, 2015 — Even as WordPress continues to globalize, many theme and plugin authors still do not implement internationalization/localization functions into their code; for one of two reasons. One, perhaps they simply don’t realize it’s a “thing” – I hope this presentation will change that fact. Two, they’re afraid of learning the ins and outs of the necessary functions because it can seem confusing at first – I hope this presentation will demonstrate how easy it can be.
In this presentation I’ talk about why i18n/l10n is important, use examples that show how to use many of the more common translation functions, and with luck get more developers to use them in their products in the future.
