July 10, 2015 — Beyond the land of responsive design lies the world of adaptive experiences. Where not only does your site work well on different screen sizes, it adapts to them. Mighty morphing design works on any device, in any place. Yet it goes beyond that, these are designs that optimise, reduce and change depending on the device you are using. It’s beyond just popping a sidebar below the content and calling it responsive. Mighty morphing design is the way we should and need to be designing. In this talk I’ll show you what it is and show you how you can become a mighty morphing designer.
June 1, 2015 — Taking stock of the world of WordPress themes as going into mid-year 2015. June 1, 2015 — All too often when we think of colour we think of trends and palettes. But, colour should and does go deeper than that. It influences even how people interact with what we create. By simply changing the colour of a button you can change it’s meaning. With a bit of theory you can easily create combinations to enhance or activate moods. Colour theory is at it’s core about colour mixing. Beyond this there are human differences, cultural implications of colour. Colour is complex. Knowing even the basics of colour theory and psychology means you have a powerful tool in your kit.
March 13, 2015 — It’s time to stop putting everything including the kitchen sink into themes. A theme shouldn’t be a bloated monster with an options panel that stretches out the horizon. This talk is a call to action, to stop making themes that do everything and start making themes that focus. Themes that are designed to meet a need, to fit a market. Themes that work out of the box and don’t require a manual you could use to hold up a table that’s missing a leg. Themes that don’t be my everything.

October 9, 2014 — Underscores is a starter theme, but what does that mean? Why should you use Underscores, also known as simply _s? In this talk I’ll go through why at Automattic we use it to create our themes. I’ll also show you why and how you can too.
July 10, 2014 — You can bring delight to users by giving thought to even the smallest part of your theme. This talk is about how to not accept the default and to consider even the smallest element of your theme. It shows that theme details matter.
December 12, 2013 — This is a tale of a theme, from its early stages of research through to the first steps into wireframes and the move into a prototype. It’s a tale of joy, sadness and a dash of danger as browsers are fought and code tamed. This is a story that doesn’t include Photoshop but that does include designing in code. It’s a story we all know variations of and this is my version. This is the story of my design process and how I create themes.
November 9, 2013 — This session is a panel discussion with audience questions about BuddyPress with Tammie Lister, John James Jacoby, Boone Gorges, Paul Gibbs and Raymond Ho.
